Communication: How Do We Communicate.??

Hello and Welcome back.! 😃

Today's post is about something very basic yet the most important thing in our daily life : Communication.

We all communicate in various ways and in different languages (verbal or non-verbal). Communication is not only about 'talking', it is about 'conveying the message'. This 'conveying of message' can happen in any form and yet will be called as communication. First, we need to understand that communication is a process and through that process, we interact or communicate with others. Communication can be verbal, non-verbal or technical. I'll be writing about the 'types of communication' in my later posts, I'm not going into this right now. For this post, I'll be explaining communication and talking about the communication process.

Definition:

"Communication is a process by which a person. group, or organization transmits some type of information to another person, group, or organization" (Jerald Greenberg). Communication consists of three components, 1) The Sender, 2) The Message, 3) The Receiver. Communication happens when a sender sends a message to any other person, then that person receives it and also understands it. From sending a message to receiving it and also, the receiver understanding the message sent by the sender completes the whole communication.

Communication is a basic nature of living beings. All living beings communicate in their everyday life. Humans communicate by languages, and language can be said as the main ingredient for communication. Languages differ so as the way of communication. Language actually makes a difference in communication among people. Language is something which we learn from the beginning of our life and through which we also learn to communicate.

The Process of Communication:

The communication process involves four stages, naming, Encoding, Transmission of message, Decoding and Feedback.

Encoding: The process by which an idea is transformed so that it can be transmitted to, and recognized by, a receiver. This can be a written or spoken message. The sender puts down his/her message through words, what he/she wants to convey to the other person. The process of putting down the message in any form, verbal or written, is called 'encoding'.

Transmission of message: The encoded message then gets transmitted through a channel of communication. This transmission can happen with words verbally conveyed, written in physical or in electronic form or just using technology. The pathways over which messages are transmitted are called the channels of communication.

Decoding: The process by which a receiver of message transforms them back into the sender's ideas is called 'decoding'. Simplifying it; when the sent message is received by the receiver and he/she is able to understand what the sender is trying to say, through the message, is called decoding.

Feedback: Feedback is actually the knowledge about the impact of messages on receivers. Which means, when the message has been decoded, the receiver transmits a new message to the original sender to let the sender know, that he understood the original message and if he has any opinion about that particular topic. In a casual conversation it is actually the 'reply'.

Despite this very simple process of communication, it rarely operates flawlessly. There is always some external elements which disrupts the smooth communication and acts as barriers or disturbances. These disturbances are called 'Noise'. Noise is something which is capable of distorting the clarity of messages at any point during the communication process. Eg. technical glitches can be a strong example of noise.

This is actually how the whole communication happens in our everyday life. Without any notice we go through with these processes and communicate with anyone and everyone. We don't realize but if you pay attention from now on, you will see this whole process of communication happening. It is a real life phenomenon and an amazing thing which is involved in every conversation we have with people, may it be verbal, written or technological.

Now, here's a small additional part for those who's gonna need this topic to study.. Yes, we try to incorporate some extra information for all those students out there, just to help you out a little from our side. I hope you are benefitted from this blog in some or the other way.. Gathering knowledge is always fun.!! 😄

The Nature of Communication:

  1. Communication is a continuous & inevitable process.
  2. Communication is always meaning based.
  3. Communication can be intentional or unintentional.
  4. It involves interaction with others and transactions of messages.
  5. It is also a spiraling process as it goes forward and then comes back as feedback.
  6. Communication always have to be contextual.
  7. It is the life force of any business.

Understand What Therapy Actually Is...

Hello everyone.. Hope you all are well and safe in this challenging time. We all know that this is a difficult time we are facing and due this pandemic & lockdowns we are stuck at home. These challenging situations have created many issues in our lives. And mental health issues have increased too. As many of us are seeking professional help, or many of us not seeking, we should know about therapy. Many of us have experienced a situation, where we had taken advice from our elders, friends or relatives. And talking to them helped us a lot. Yes, those talking can sooth us for a temporary period of time, but that doesn't signify as THERAPY . As a psychologist, I can understand that there's a pre-notion about therapy in people and they think that therapy is just 'talking' .  To your surprise, IT'S NOT. Yes, talking is an essential part of therapy but it's just not casual talking what happens in a therapy session. It's much more than that... And to understand
